New Delhi, Oct 11 : The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Sunday alleged that a group of volunteers travelling from Karnataka to the national capital had been detained near the Delhi-Haryana border and taken away from Delhi under disputed circumstances, raising concerns over their safety and access to legal assistance.
In a statement, the party claimed that the group comprised around 15 to 20 men and 12 to 13 women. It also raised concerns over the alleged absence of female police personnel accompanying the team transporting the detainees, questioning whether the prescribed procedures and safeguards for detaining women were being followed.
The CJP said the families of the volunteers and their legal representatives in Karnataka were worried about their whereabouts and well-being. It demanded that the authorities disclose their current location and clarify the circumstances surrounding their alleged detention.
The party also sought immediate access to the detainees for their lawyers and legal aid representatives. It urged law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with applicable legal safeguards governing the detention of women.
The development comes amid heightened security in Delhi following protests called by the CJP and student organisations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The party called on the authorities to clarify the destination to which the volunteers were being taken and provide details of their detention status.
The allegations could not be independently verified.
