Bengaluru, Oct 12 : Police on Monday detained BJP Mahila Morcha activists who attempted to march towards the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office in Bengaluru, escalating the political confrontation over sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.
The protesters demanded accountability from the Congress leadership over the allegations against Akoijam, the Lok Sabha member from Manipur. Accusing the party of failing to take a firm stand on an issue concerning women's safety and dignity, the activists raised slogans against the Congress and called for stringent action against the MP.
Police intervened when the demonstrators attempted to proceed towards the KPCC headquarters and detained them to prevent the march from advancing.
The protest comes amid a growing controversy over Jawaharlal Nehru University's decision to terminate Akoijam's services following an internal inquiry into sexual harassment complaints. The development has intensified the BJP's criticism of the Congress and its handling of the matter.
The BJP Mahila Morcha has questioned the Congress leadership's response and demanded action against the MP, arguing that allegations of this nature require a clear and accountable response from the party.
The controversy has further intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress, with the opposition party seeking to make the issue a broader test of the Congress's commitment to women's safety and its willingness to act against leaders facing serious allegations.
The allegations against Akoijam remain subject to due process. The university's disciplinary action, by itself, does not establish criminal guilt.
