Kohli Finds Another Gear, Smashes Stunning ODI Hundred in Thiruvananthapuram

New Delhi, Sep 28 : Virat Kohli produced another memorable ODI performance in Thiruvananthapuram, striking a stunning unbeaten century against the West Indies and showcasing a more aggressive version of his batting.

Kohli's 74-ball hundred was his third-fastest in ODIs and his 30th century while chasing. The innings also saw him cross the 15,000-run mark in the format. He smashed a record nine sixes, with his first coming just four deliveries into his innings.

Despite the milestones, Kohli said he remains focused on hard work, gratitude and staying grounded.

“Just keeping my head down, working hard, and thanking God for everything that I've been blessed with and the opportunities that I've gotten in my life to be where I am,” Kohli said after the match.

The former India captain's aggressive approach was evident throughout the chase. He combined his trademark ability to rotate the strike with powerful boundary-hitting and took 53 runs from 26 balls against West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph.

Kohli said he has been working on increasing his scoring rate and playing with greater freedom at this stage of his career.

“I've got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and play a gear or two higher,” he said. “It excites you when you have to unlock a new version at this stage of your career.”

The 38-year-old batter also underlined the importance of physical fitness in maintaining a positive and attacking mindset.

“I stay physically fit and then I'm able to visualise the game in the way that I want to play, which allows me the best chance to go out there and execute,” he said.

India captain Shubman Gill, who shared a prolific partnership with Kohli during the chase, praised the veteran batter's freedom and enjoyment of the game.

“He's batting superbly, and I think he's enjoying the game a lot more, playing with freedom and enjoying the game,” Gill said.

Kohli, however, stressed that attacking cricket must be balanced with sound judgment. He said his objective is to maintain positive intent without becoming reckless.

“I'm going to continue to play like that, but not be reckless. There's a fine line which, as a professional, as an experienced player, I should have the ability to execute in this way without playing reckless shots,” he said.

Reflecting on his long career, Kohli said representing India remains a source of immense gratitude. He acknowledged the attention and expectations that come with fame but said players should never forget their journey or the opportunity to represent their country.

“I enjoy each and every minute that I'm out there playing for India,” he said. “I have nothing but gratitude in my heart, and, as I said, I just want to put my head down, keep working hard, put a smile on my face, and hopefully make other people smile too.”

Kohli also had a message for younger players, urging them to remain completely committed once they step onto the field.

“Once you enter the ground, this is everything, and it should be everything for you guys. And just put your body on the line,” he said.

The innings marked another statement from Kohli, who appears determined to add greater attacking intent to the discipline and control that have defined his ODI career.
