NEW DELHI, Oct 2 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, recalling the enduring relevance of his ideals and saying that Bapu’s message would continue to guide the country towards building a better society and a “Viksit Bharat”.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi said, “May Bapu’s timeless message keep guiding us towards a better society and a Viksit Bharat.”
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, in 1869. The occasion is also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence, following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2007 recognising Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and its continuing global relevance.
Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, simplicity and social harmony continue to feature prominently in commemorations of his legacy across the country. Successive governments have invoked his principles in programmes and campaigns focusing on cleanliness, rural development, social inclusion and public service.
Modi’s reference to a “better society” and “Viksit Bharat” comes in the context of the government’s broader development vision for India towards 2047, with emphasis on economic growth, social welfare, self-reliance and improved public services.
October 2 is also marked by nationwide programmes promoting cleanliness and civic responsibility, reflecting Gandhi’s emphasis on sanitation and individual responsibility.
Gandhi’s birth anniversary is commemorated across the country through prayer meetings, tributes and public programmes. At Raj Ghat in New Delhi, political leaders and dignitaries traditionally pay homage to the Mahatma, with the occasion serving as a reaffirmation of the values of peace, non-violence, communal harmony and service associated with his public life.
