PM Modi to inaugurate first stretch of Chennai Metro Phase II on October 11

Chennai, Sep 26 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Chennai on October 11 to inaugurate the first operational stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project between Poonamallee and Vadapalani.
The 14.64-km Poonamallee-Vadapalani corridor, comprising 11 elevated stations, has been completed. The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has completed the required testing and secured the necessary approvals following an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.
The stretch is part of the 26-km Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor being developed under Phase II of the Chennai Metro project. Phase II envisages a 118.9-km network comprising three corridors.
Trial runs and safety checks, including signalling, track performance, train operations and structural safety, have been completed on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch.
The service was earlier expected to be inaugurated in February but was delayed pending confirmation of the Prime Minister's schedule. According to the latest information from Chennai Metro Rail authorities, the inauguration is now scheduled for October 11.
During his one-day visit, Modi is also scheduled to attend an event at IIT Madras, where three National Highway projects and projects of Indian Oil Corporation are expected to be inaugurated.
He will subsequently flag off the Poonamallee-Vadapalani Metro service and travel on the newly opened stretch along with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
