Mumbai, Oct 16 : The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Friday launched its ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ demonstration at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai, with young participants, including members of Gen Z, waving the national flag in protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstration coincided with a similar protest organised by the party in New Delhi.
Videos circulating on social media showed protesters holding and waving the Tricolour at Azad Maidan. The gathering appeared peaceful, with no major sloganeering audible in the footage.
CJP urged its supporters to participate in the campaign against the Chief Election Commissioner and express solidarity with the party's ongoing agitation in the national capital.
Mumbai Police strengthened security arrangements ahead of the demonstration, deploying additional personnel, barricades and police vans around the venue. Videos and photographs circulating online showed police personnel stationed at several locations near the protest ground.
The police granted permission to CJP on Thursday to hold the one-day demonstration on October 16. Following the approval, the party asked its supporters to assemble at Azad Maidan instead of marching towards the Gateway of India. Team CJP confirmed that permission had been obtained from the Azad Maidan police station.
According to the permission letter, the demonstration was authorised from 9 am to 6 pm, while the party's message to supporters mentioned timings of 10 am to 5 pm.
The permission was issued under Rule 4(2) of Maharashtra government regulations governing public meetings, protests and processions within the jurisdiction of the Additional Commissioner of Police, South Region. The notice also referred to Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
Azad Maidan is a designated venue for rallies, demonstrations, sit-ins and public meetings, allowing protests to be conducted while minimising inconvenience to traffic and nearby residents.
Police instructed participants to remain within the designated protest ground and avoid gathering near its entrance or on adjoining roads. The restrictions were aimed at preventing traffic disruption and ensuring the demonstration proceeded peacefully.
