New Delhi, Oct 11 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his greetings to the people on the commencement of Navratri, invoking the blessings of Maa Shailputri, the first form of Goddess Durga worshipped during the nine-day festival, and expressing hope that her divine grace would inspire peace, patience and self-confidence among citizens.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi offered prayers to Maa Shailputri, who is revered as an embodiment of peace, purity and strength, and wished that her blessings would always remain upon the people of the country.

“On the auspicious beginning of Navratri, I offer countless salutations at the feet of Maa Shailputri, the goddess who embodies peace. May her divine grace kindle the light of patience and self-confidence in everyone's heart. I pray that the Mother's blessings always remain upon the people of our country,” the Prime Minister said.

Navratri is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals, dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. The festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil and is observed across India through prayers, fasting, religious ceremonies and cultural festivities.

The first day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri, whose name means “daughter of the mountains”. Traditionally depicted riding a bull and carrying a trident and a lotus, the goddess symbolises purity, determination and spiritual strength. Devotees seek her blessings at the beginning of the festival, which is considered an occasion for spiritual renewal and reaffirmation of faith.

In his message, Modi emphasised the values of peace, patience and self-confidence, urging people to draw inspiration from their spiritual beliefs and cultivate these qualities in their daily lives.

Navratri is celebrated with particular fervour in Gujarat, where Garba and Dandiya Raas attract large gatherings, and in West Bengal, where Durga Puja is marked by elaborate decorations, community celebrations and religious ceremonies. Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and several other states also witness extensive temple rituals and devotional observances during the festival.

The nine-day celebration culminates in Vijayadashami, popularly known as Dussehra, which signifies the victory of righteousness over evil.

Through his Navratri greetings, the Prime Minister expressed hope that Maa Shailputri’s blessings would bring peace and well-being to households across the country, strengthen people's inner resolve and inspire confidence in the days ahead.
