Jammu, Oct 10 : The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Friday accused the BJP-led government of imposing an “undeclared emergency” in the national capital and other places to prevent opposition leaders and activists from joining the ongoing movement for democracy in Delhi.
Reacting to the BJP’s protests against the Congress, JKPCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma termed the ruling party’s actions a sign of frustration, alleging that such a situation was unprecedented in the country’s democratic history.
In a statement issued here, Sharma said widespread protests across the country over alleged “Vote Chori” and media reports highlighting alleged violations of electoral norms by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) had caused frustration among BJP cadres.
He alleged that the electoral process was being influenced to benefit the ruling party and claimed that the government was using its power to suppress peaceful dissent.
Sharma said the situation in the national capital and BJP-ruled states reflected the government’s fear of democratic protests, adding that the Constitution guaranteed citizens the right to express dissent peacefully.
He further alleged that a large number of peaceful protesters had been detained in the national capital in an attempt to curb the ongoing demonstrations.
The JKPCC spokesperson asserted that such measures would not succeed in stopping the movement, claiming that more people would take to the streets to “Save Democracy.”
He reiterated the Congress’s demand for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and called for an electoral system free from government influence and control.
