New Delhi, Oct 12 : Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Monday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of disrespecting the dignity of the Supreme Court, alleging that his actions reflected an anarchic approach to constitutional institutions.
Malhotra recalled that Gandhi had once torn up a Bill introduced by his own government and alleged that the Congress leader had now shown disregard for the dignity of the apex court.
The Delhi BJP chief said Gandhi had recently announced plans to meet the Chief Justice of India (CJI) regarding the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), claiming that an appointment had been sought. However, the CJI declined to meet the INDIA alliance leaders, citing established rules and procedures, he said.
Malhotra further alleged that, despite the refusal, INDIA alliance leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav and others, reached near the Supreme Court premises in the evening, after court hours, at Gandhi's instigation. He described the gathering as a “theatrical march”.
Stating that the President of India holds the highest constitutional office in the country, Malhotra alleged that Gandhi had shown disrespect towards both the President and the CJI by seeking an appointment with the latter after meeting the President.
The BJP leader also pointed out that the INDIA alliance had announced plans to file a petition in the Supreme Court against the CEC. However, he claimed that Gandhi's alleged conduct had undermined the dignity of the apex court and the office of the CJI.
Malhotra further alleged that Gandhi had forfeited the moral right to approach the Supreme Court through such a petition by acting in a manner that, according to him, disrespected the institution.
