Kolhapur, October 12: Sindhudurg has become the first district in Maharashtra to implement the decision to change caste-based names of wadis (settlements) and roads in rural areas, an official statement said on Monday.

According to a press release issued by the District Information Office (DIO), the state Social Justice and Special Assistance Department had issued a government resolution directing that caste-based names of settlements and roads in rural villages be replaced with names of great personalities and those reflecting democratic values.

In line with the decision, the Gram Sabhas concerned passed resolutions to rename 192 settlements and 25 roads in rural areas of Sindhudurg district. The proposals were subsequently submitted to the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad's Gram Panchayat Department through the respective Group Development Officers for further action.

Meanwhile, under a Rural Development Department decision dated October 9, 2025, district collectors were empowered to approve the renaming of caste-based settlements and roads.

Accordingly, Sindhudurg District Collector Trupti Dhodamise, through an order dated October 13, 2025, approved the renaming of 192 caste-based settlements and 25 roads in the district, making Sindhudurg the first district in Maharashtra to implement the decision.
