Bengaluru, Oct 28 : The Karnataka government has decided to convene the 10-day winter session of the state legislature from December 7 at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi.

Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, in a letter dated October 27 to Jyothi, Secretary in-charge of the Karnataka Legislative Council Secretariat, said the decision was taken following deliberations at the Cabinet meeting held on October 15.

The letter directed officials to initiate preliminary arrangements for conducting the sessions of both Houses of the legislature in Belagavi. A formal notification confirming the schedule is expected to be issued after the initial preparations are completed.

The winter session is likely to witness heated debates between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP-JD(S) alliance on several key issues concerning the state.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy criticised the Congress government over its handling of the state's finances, alleging that it had pushed Karnataka towards bankruptcy.

Demanding the publication of a white paper on the state's financial position, he questioned the government's ability to continue funding its guarantee schemes and provide financial assistance to farmers. He also alleged that public money was being misused.

On the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Narayanaswamy accused the Congress of opposing the exercise while imposing conditions on beneficiaries of its guarantee schemes.

The state government is yet to issue the formal notification confirming the dates and schedule of the winter session.
