NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the two-day International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Saturday, September 19.
Organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the conference will bring together judges, environmental experts, policymakers, regulators and judicial representatives from 17 countries to deliberate on emerging environmental and climate challenges.
According to a release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, Modi will inaugurate the conference at around 10 am. The event will be held on September 19 and 20.
The conference will witness the participation of Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, District Court Judges, environmental experts, Secretaries of various Union ministries and senior government officials. Representatives of State Judicial Academies and State Legal Services Authorities will also attend the deliberations.
Members of State Expert Appraisal Committees (SEACs), State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAAs), State Wetland Authorities and other institutions involved in environmental governance are also expected to participate.
The international gathering will provide a platform for judicial and judicial representatives from 17 countries to exchange perspectives on environmental law, climate change and institutional responses to increasingly complex ecological challenges.
The deliberations will focus on critical environmental and climate issues, including gaps in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement. Participants will also discuss ways to strengthen environmental governance and institutional cooperation by bringing judicial, scientific, administrative and regulatory perspectives together.
The conference is also expected to examine how institutions can respond more effectively to environmental challenges that transcend administrative and national boundaries, including issues with cross-border implications.
The NGT, established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, is a specialised judicial body dealing with matters related to environmental protection, conservation of forests and other natural resources, and enforcement of legal rights relating to the environment.
Over the years, its jurisdiction has covered a wide range of issues, including pollution, environmental clearances, wetlands, forests, waste management and ecological conservation.
The conference comes amid growing concerns over climate change, environmental degradation and the effective enforcement of environmental safeguards. The participation of judicial representatives from different countries is expected to facilitate the exchange of experiences in environmental adjudication and institutional mechanisms for addressing complex ecological challenges.
