Shivakumar’s Sting-Plot Allegation Triggers Political Showdown in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Oct 9 : Karnataka’s political confrontation has intensified after Chief Minister D K Shivakumar alleged that an attempt was made to trap him in a sting operation shortly after he assumed office, triggering a war of words between the ruling Congress and the BJP.

Shivakumar claimed that he possessed photographs and documents that could help identify those allegedly involved in the operation. However, it remains unclear whether the material has been submitted to the police, independently verified or made available for official scrutiny.

The Chief Minister said he had gathered information about the alleged operation through police officers and possessed documents detailing the pretext under which the individuals approached him and the people they met. He also recalled an earlier alleged attempt by a private television channel to conduct a similar operation when he was a minister.

Warning Cabinet colleagues and government officials to remain vigilant, Shivakumar said he had three layers of security around himself. He also claimed to have moved several individuals from their positions because of what he described as questionable intentions.

The Chief Minister further alleged that certain individuals had been engaged by political functionaries and asserted that he had strong evidence to substantiate his claims. However, the identities of those allegedly involved, the details of the operation and the nature of the evidence have not been independently established.

The controversy escalated after Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy alleged that Shivakumar had used a sting operation to force Siddaramaiah out of the Chief Minister’s post. The competing allegations have brought questions of political manoeuvring and alleged covert operations to the forefront of Karnataka’s political debate.

However, the two claims remain distinct, and no independently verified evidence presented so far establishes a connection between them.

Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and Home Minister Priyank Kharge backed Shivakumar’s claims, while Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi alleged that individuals from North India, purportedly linked to a private agency, had attempted to trap the Chief Minister.

The allegations, if substantiated, could raise concerns about attempts to manipulate public officials and the use of covert methods in political rivalries. Establishing their credibility would require documentary evidence, independent corroboration and responses from those accused.

BJP state president B Y Vijayendra hit back at the Congress, accusing the party of having a history of similar operations. He cited the earlier controversy involving BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, who had been at the centre of an alleged honey-trap controversy.

The BJP’s response has widened the political confrontation, with both sides invoking earlier controversies to question the credibility of their opponents. However, allegations in a previous case do not, by themselves, establish the veracity of the current claims.

The next significant development is likely to depend on whether Shivakumar’s allegations are followed by verifiable evidence or official action.

Key questions remain unanswered: whether a formal complaint has been filed, whether the photographs and documents have been submitted to investigators, whether any inquiry has been initiated, and whether the individuals or organisations allegedly involved have been identified and given an opportunity to respond.

Official confirmation on these issues would help distinguish political allegations from established investigative findings.

For now, the episode marks a fresh escalation in Karnataka’s political confrontation, with the Congress defending the Chief Minister and the BJP challenging his claims. Whether the controversy leads to a formal investigation or remains a war of political accusations will depend on the evidence that emerges and the response of the relevant authorities.
