Thrissur, September 5: Eight people were killed after a car rammed into a stationary truck at Panambikunnu Centre near Kaipamangalam in Kerala’s Thrissur district in the early hours of Saturday, police said. The deceased include seven engineering students and the car driver.
The students were pursuing engineering at a college in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu-registered car was travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur when the accident occurred around midnight.
According to preliminary information, the car collided with the rear of a truck parked on the roadside. The impact was so severe that the car was completely mangled, trapping the occupants inside.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police rushed to the spot and used specialised equipment to cut open the car and retrieve the bodies.
The bodies have been shifted to private hospitals in Kodungallur. Authorities are completing the formalities, including identification of the deceased and other legal procedures.
The truck involved in the accident was registered in Maharashtra. Preliminary information indicates that road construction work was underway in the area and several trucks had been parked along the roadside.
Local residents have expressed concern that the frequent parking of heavy vehicles along the roadside, coupled with the ongoing road construction, has increased the risk of accidents in the area. The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
