Thane, Sep 21 : Tension prevailed in Titwala in Maharashtra’s Thane district after supporters of BJP corporator Upeksha Bhoir and Thackeray group leader Suresh Bhoir allegedly clashed during a Ganpati immersion procession over the order in which the processions would proceed, police said.
The incident took place around midnight on September 19 in the areas around Regency Sarvam, Shree Krishna Hospital Road, MNS Chowk and Station Road in Titwala.
According to police, the dispute began when both groups sought to proceed one after the other during the immersion procession. The argument soon escalated into verbal abuse, pushing and scuffling, briefly disrupting public order in the area.
Upeksha Bhoir alleged that the incident was triggered deliberately due to political rivalry stemming from previous elections. She also claimed that she was made to wait for nearly three hours for the immersion and alleged that members of Suresh Bhoir’s family had harassed her during the Ganesh festival in previous years.
Following the incident, Kalyan Taluka police registered a case against around 70 to 80 persons from both groups, including Shaktiman Bhoir, Upeksha Bhoir, Pradeep Bhoir and Suresh Bhoir.
Police said the accused have been booked for allegedly violating prohibitory orders issued on September 11, using loudspeakers without permission and causing public nuisance.
Further investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
