Bengaluru, Oct 23: Polling for four Karnataka Legislative Council constituencies began at 8 am on Friday, with the ruling Congress taking on the BJP-JD(S) alliance in a contest that will test the Opposition partners’ electoral coordination and their ability to consolidate support among graduates and teachers.

Voting will continue until 4 pm, while counting of votes is scheduled for October 27.

The four constituencies going to the polls are South-East Graduates’, West Graduates’, North-East Teachers’ and Bengaluru Teachers’.

The BJP has fielded candidates in the South-East Graduates’, West Graduates’ and North-East Teachers’ constituencies, while its ally JD(S) is contesting the Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency.

The BJP currently holds three of the four seats and is seeking to retain its stronghold, while the JD(S) aims to wrest the Bengaluru Teachers’ seat from the Congress.

The elections are significant for the BJP and JD(S), as the outcome will indicate how effectively the two parties can transfer their respective support bases to each other’s candidates under the alliance arrangement.

For the Congress, the polls offer an opportunity to challenge the BJP’s hold over three constituencies while defending its position in the Bengaluru Teachers’ seat.

The results are also expected to provide insights into the political mood among graduates and teachers, whose concerns often include education, employment, professional interests and governance.

The electoral outcome will become clear when the votes are counted on October 27.
