BENGALURU, Sept 8: Karnataka authorities have seized expired and mislabelled food products worth Rs 1.38 crore during a major enforcement drive, raising concerns over the sale and storage of unsafe food items in the state.
The Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FSDA) conducted inspections at food establishments and storage facilities as part of intensified checks to ensure compliance with food safety and labelling regulations.
During the inspections, enforcement teams detected food products that had either crossed their expiry dates or failed to meet prescribed labelling requirements. The seized stocks were taken into custody to prevent them from reaching consumers.
In a separate action, medicines valued at around Rs 4.02 lakh were also seized for being stored without the mandatory licences, officials said.
The large-scale seizures highlight the need for stricter monitoring of food businesses and supply chains to prevent expired or improperly labelled products from entering the market.
Authorities have warned food business operators against violating food safety norms and said further action would be taken against establishments found flouting the regulations.
