BENGALURU, SEPT 13: Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday invoked the legacy of Bal Gangadhar Tilak to criticise the BJP over the ongoing controversy surrounding Ganeshotsav celebrations, accusing the Opposition party of giving a communal colour to a tradition that historically brought people together.

“Ganesh is not the property of the BJP. This tradition was started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and has continued for generations,” Shivakumar told reporters at the KPCC office in Bengaluru.

Accusing the BJP of attempting to provoke communal sentiments around Ganeshotsav, Shivakumar said the government wanted the festival to be celebrated peacefully and without disruption.

“They are provoking communal sentiments. Ganeshotsav must be celebrated peacefully. Processions should maintain discipline and organisers must take precautions, particularly regarding electric poles and wires,” he said.

The Chief Minister also alleged that there was a broader attempt to create unrest in society and claimed that anti-social elements were being used for the purpose.

“There is a conspiracy to create unrest in society and anti-social elements are being used. We have instructed the police to remain alert,” he said.

Shivakumar's remarks came in response to Opposition Leader R Ashoka's allegations that the government had imposed restrictions on Ganeshotsav celebrations.

Taking a sharp dig at Ashoka, Shivakumar accused the former Home Minister of trying to create an issue where none existed.

“Falsehood is the BJP's household deity. Why is he going to the police station? They are trying to create an issue where none exists,” he said.

At the same time, Shivakumar rejected allegations of political interference and asserted that the government would not misuse its authority to restrict religious celebrations or BJP political programmes.

“We will not misuse power to impose restrictions on anyone. That is not our way of functioning,” he said.
