Mangaluru, Oct 23 : An elephant calf aged around one year was found dead in a plantation at Harladka in Thodikana village of Sullia taluk in Dakshina Kannada district, raising concerns over human-elephant interactions in the region.

The calf was found in a plantation belonging to Chandrashekar, where a herd of wild elephants, reportedly from the Bhagamandala reserve forest, had entered the area and damaged coffee and banana crops.

The plantation is situated on elevated terrain, and the calf is suspected to have slipped and fallen while the herd was returning towards the forest. There is also a possibility that other elephants in the herd may have trampled the calf.

However, the exact circumstances and cause of the calf's death have not yet been established.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing concerns over the movement of wild elephants into plantations in the region, causing crop damage and anxiety among local residents.
